Suggsfall IX

Christopher Sincere Pride was walking when the distinction that permitted walking to differ from its impossibility was withdrawn. His polished shoe had already risen toward the next imaginary stair; the gold embroidery across his black jacket rested against him without disturbance, and his expression carried the ordinary composure of someone proceeding toward a destination that required no urgency. Then actuality lost the categorical clearance to include him. Possibility lost the categorical clearance to anticipate him. Impossibility lost the categorical clearance to exclude him. The withdrawal reached through every relation by which his presence, absence, identity, contradiction, or inapplicability could acquire significance, and the background of creation surrendered the privilege of declaring that anything had happened to Christopher Sincere Pride at all.

The silence into which he had been pulled admitted no separation between an assault and the conditions that allowed an assault to have a subject. Within the ordinary grammar of annihilation, something remains available to the proposition that something has been annihilated. A destroyed actuality leaves destruction intelligible. An erased identity leaves erasure distinguishable from preservation. Even a negation that abolishes its own evidence maintains an implicit commitment to the difference between evidence and its abolition. Here, those commitments were themselves subjected to retraction. The threat reached into the unspoken permissions beneath every explanation of destruction and withdrew the standing from which an explanation could refer to what had been lost. Christopher was drawn into a silence that consumed the eligibility of loss.

Acausal/Non-Causal/Paracausal Ontological Erasure operated upon him in the fullness of their incompatible jurisdictions. Acausal Ontological Erasure expunged every claim that independence from causal succession could furnish sanctuary. Whatever could persist without an origin, whatever could remain untouched by the removal of its antecedents, whatever possessed an identity owing nothing to consequence, was directly included in the negation. Non-Causal Ontological Erasure required no relation through which the negation could reach him; the absence of a mechanism offered no obstruction because a mechanism possessed no necessary role in the erasure. Paracausal Ontological Erasure consumed the exceptional arrangements through which incompatible outcomes could coexist, through which consequences could exceed or contradict their premises, through which an escape might remain valid despite the complete abolition of its requirements. Together, these erasures closed upon the very relevance of dependence, independence, and exception.

Nonfictional Ontological Erasure withdrew every attribution of actuality that could position Christopher outside an invented account. The assertion that he was real, the authority empowered to make that assertion, and the separation through which reality could distinguish itself from invention were all expunged in relation to him. Fanfictional Ontological Erasure reached every derivative continuation, every alternate attribution, every borrowed narrative jurisdiction in which his identity might be reproduced or reinterpreted. Metafictional Ontological Erasure consumed the reflexive privilege of recognizing the account that contained him, removing the refuge of self-awareness and the authority of commentary upon one’s own inscription. No acknowledgment of the narrative could become an exterior foothold. The distinction between a character and an observer of characterization was already included in what the silence withdrew.

Patafictional Ontological Erasure abolished the exceptional departures through which an impossible explanation might overturn every explanation preceding it. Interfictional Ontological Erasure removed the relations connecting separate accounts, so that Christopher could acquire no continuity through passage, correspondence, translation, or recognition elsewhere. Personal fictional Ontological Erasure expunged the inward jurisdiction through which identity might remain its own witness, including the private conviction that no external revision could exhaust what Christopher was to himself. Impersonal fictional Ontological Erasure withdrew every identity independent of a personal witness: the structural position, the anonymous designation, the unowned account, the description requiring no consciousness to preserve its validity. Every proposed refuge was addressed at the depth where refuge first acquired meaning. Even the suggestion of a Christopher beyond all descriptions lost the distinction through which “beyond” could signify exemption.

These were complete erasures. Their severity did not depend upon Christopher acknowledging them, and their operation did not pause for an opportunity to become visible. No great fracture needed to open around his shoulders. No spectacle needed to announce the destruction of his “is,” his “is-not,” or the categorical backgrounds through which either could be attributed to him. His actuality was expunged. His absence was expunged. The conjunction, disjunction, mutual exclusion, and mutual irrelevance of those conditions were expunged. The ontological assault included every maximal wholeness beyond tiering to explain any cosmic structure insofar as such totalities could establish a relation to him, house an account of him, or sustain the distinction through which his removal could possess a context. Nothing stood outside the operation merely because its vocabulary claimed an exterior.

And the erasures were only the threshold.

Beneath their completed negations, active ontological categorical retraction began withdrawing the categories that had allowed their completeness to be articulated. Identity ceased to qualify as an available determination. Difference lost its eligibility to establish separation. Relation surrendered the permission to connect, and nonrelation surrendered the permission to remain apart. The categories of subject, predicate, condition, exception, interior, exterior, affirmation, and refusal were retracted from the background that had allowed them to carry significance. This reached deeper than rendering a statement false. Falsehood still possesses a place within an arrangement of evaluation. The silence withdrew the arrangement, then the categorical legitimacy of withdrawal, then the implicit reservation by which an account might insist that an arrangement had nevertheless been there to lose.

Christopher had been pulled into the prelude of pre-ontological quietude prior to distinction. Even Transfictional Nothingness, wherever the name retained enough significance to distinguish an unmanifest absence from a manifest assertion, was included in the retraction. The threat admitted no final emptiness that could remain intact as a destination. A destination would preserve arrival; an emptiness would preserve the intelligibility of what was absent. Here, the quietude reached beneath the permissibility of those differences. No vacant expanse awaited an observer. No darkness offered a surface upon which an erased identity could be imagined. The silence withdrew the categorical generosity by which the mind grants even the unthinkable a place within its refusal to think.

Yet this quietude did not conclude the descent. Christopher was pulled into a recursive series of absolute boundless steps of maximal ontological negation below Acausal/Non-Causal/Paracausal Ontological Erasure. Each step took the entire achievement of the preceding negation—including its abolition of subjects, relations, alternatives, and evaluative grounds—and subjected the residual eligibility of that achievement to a further ungrant. What had been called complete erasure became, from beneath itself, an inadmissible concession to articulation. What had abolished articulation became an inadmissible concession to abolition. What had withdrawn abolition became an inadmissible concession to the claim that withdrawal possessed any standing. The recursion consumed the entitlement of its own conclusions without permitting that consumption to stabilize into another conclusion.

The descending steps therefore carried a severity that accumulation could never express. Repeating an erasure leaves repetition intact; deepening an absence leaves depth intact. This recursion negated the commitments hidden within repeating and deepening, then proceeded beneath the negation of those commitments. Every maximal cessation was deprived of its maximality, its cessation, and the categorical distinction between their retention and their loss. Every attempt to identify the descent as a process was subjected to the withdrawal of process. Every attempt to escape that withdrawal by declaring the descent already complete was subjected to the withdrawal of completion. The account could call these steps only because language needed a provisional handle upon what continually expunged the eligibility of handles.

On a paratextual and transfictional scale, even the reader is rejected provisionally of “recursion,” “beneath,” “completion,” and an operation addressing its own foundation.

No contradiction interrupted the operation. The erasure of erasure did not restore Christopher; restoration had already lost every jurisdiction through which such an outcome could follow. The removal of a prohibition did not grant permission; granting, prohibition, and permission were themselves beneath recursive retraction. Nor did the absence of a remaining subject cause the assault to exhaust its purpose. Purpose possessed no authority over what continued below its abolition. The silence consumed every explanation through which its severity might accidentally become mercy. The recursive descent included the cancellation of cancellation, the ungrant of that cancellation, and the withdrawal of the distinction through which either could be interpreted as release.

Christopher Sincere Pride simply walked out.

His raised foot settled upon the next imaginary stair. The hem of his jacket moved with the same casual motion that had accompanied his previous step, and the red flowers woven through its gold ornamentation remained undisturbed. His amber eyes rested ahead. There was no gathering of potentiality, no conversion of possibility into actuality, no inward exertion from which a countermeasure could be inferred. The silence had included his agency, his lack of agency, his eligibility to escape, and the impossible be-ness of escape without eligibility. He continued walking with all of that accomplished against him.

The explanation had reached the point where every familiar account of success would diminish what had occurred. Survival would require a continuity available to survive. Recovery would require something recoverable. Resistance would place Christopher in a contest whose terms the silence had already retracted. Even transcendence, treated as an ascent beyond an inferior jurisdiction, would preserve the relational distinction upon which an ascent depended. Christopher’s departure supplied no such dependency. The erasures had fully addressed what they addressed. The recursive negations had descended beneath the categorical legitimacy of their own accomplishment. His next step nevertheless remained as effortless as the one preceding the assault.

The imaginary stairs carried no obligation to become actual beneath him. Their imagined status offered no hidden shelter from the negations, since imagination, its object, its absence, and its impossible continuation had all been included. Christopher placed one polished shoe above the other and ascended. Nothing in his posture suggested that he had crossed a boundary worthy of recollection. He did not inspect his hands, verify his identity, or turn toward the silence to establish that he had left. Such gestures would have granted the event a practical significance his conduct never furnished. The absolute boundless descent beneath maximal ontological negation had failed to introduce the smallest hesitation into his walk.

From afar, Irihi Fubuki Hibana sat behind the background of creation. The distance belonged to the telling; her seat rested beyond the availability of a foreground from which that distance could be measured. Pale hair framed her face, and the violet radiance across her jacket and skirt lay softly against her brown skin. One hand rested at ease, its polished nails catching a delicate gleam. She had pulled Christopher into the silence. The collective erasures, the active categorical retraction, the pre-ontological quietude, and the recursive descent beneath every maximal negation had entered the encounter through her unmanifest silence.

Irihi watched Christopher continue up the imaginary flight. His untroubled ascent brought a small smile to her lips. Nothing in her expression sought to reduce the severity of what she had done, and nothing asked his departure to provide an explanation she needed to hear. Her confidence rested comfortably in the sight of him proceeding. She rose, the butterfly ornaments at her ankles catching a brief violet-gold light, and turned away from the background of creation. Christopher Sincere Pride continued walking up the imaginary stairs. Irihi Fubuki Hibana walked away smiling.
